Happy Blues For Guitar Man

PointCookImageJOE Valenti was days out from playing at the Point Cook Blues Festival when a serious car accident dashed his hope. It was February and Valenti and his wife were driving down Sharps Road in Tullamarine when a truck came out of nowhere. "The car was pretty much totalled and ended up on its side," he recalls. "My wife and I were both taken to hospital in ambulances. "Thankfully, my wife was pretty much OK, but I ended up getting a fractured C6 vertebrae in my neck and ended up being in a neck brace for the next two to three months. "I never made it to work that day and I couldn't play the festival. I was really looking forward to it." It has taken plenty of time for the Westmeadows resident to get his strength back and be ready to be the frontman and guitarist he once was. Now, two months out from the Point Cook event, Valenti is well and truly ready. "I am really looking forward to getting down to Point Cook and doing what we should have been doing earlier this year," he said. "I guess it wasn't meant to be, but hopefully, fingers crossed, this February will be meant to be and I won't get hit by another truck." The Point Cook Blues Festival on February 15 will feature great music along with food, wine and children's activities. The blues festival attracted more than 2000 visitors to the historic homestead earlier this year and is a fund-raiser for local charities, including the Rotary Club of Laverton/Point Cook. Other performers that will feature are The Mannish Boys, Sweethearts, Blues Dukes, Andrea Marr Band, Jimi Hocking Blues Machine and international act Michael Charles. Cold Snap In Melbourne

Hmmm, maybe Melbourne blues band Cold Snap could have chosen a better name to endear themselves to their home town, like Tropical Holiday maybe.  However, my bet is they named themselves after the Albert Collins title giving you an insight into the style of music they play.  Either way, their electric blues has been winning them waves of new fans and a residency at the Nighthawk Blues venue, which is where Cold Snap will be recording their first live album this Friday night.  The band claims that, 'the request for an album has been overwhelming.  We figured the quickest way to give our fans what they wanted was to do a live recording at Nighthawk, our shows there always get the whole joint jumpin'.'  Nighthawk Blues is at 114 Nepean Hwy, Mentone - $10 entry.

For your opportunity to be part of Cold Snap's live album recording make sure you get down to Nighthawk on Friday 5th December at 9pm.  Nighthawk, 114 Nepean Highway, Mentone; $10 Entry

Hot Tamale and Cold Snap !

Cold Snap certainly made an impression on the crowd at the Clifton Hill Hotel on Saturday night when they were special guests at the Hot Tamale Babe CD Launch Party for Jeannie Lushes & the Blues Boys.  Cold Snap kicked off the proceedings with their classic Chicago Blues Sound. Joe Valenti led his cast with his older vocal sound.  However, with such tender years on his side there is only better things to come for these guys.  Cold Snap would like to take this opportunity to thank Jeannie Lushes & the Blue Boys for letting us be part of their launch party. We all had a ball and wish them all the best with their CD sales.

So be sure to get down to Nighthawk again on the 8th November to find out what you missed out on last night!

Fun For Open Minds At Fairfield.

SPIRITS were high at the annual Open Mind Fiesta in Fairfield.  About 35,000 people enjoyed the weekend sunshine and listened to bands such as Busted Onions and Cold Snap and grazed on food from Station St restaurants.  The fiesta is a collaboration between the Mental Illness Fellowship Victoria and the Station St Traders Association, promoting a healthy attitude towards mental illness and promoting local trade.

Mental Illness Fellowship chief executive Elizabeth Crowther said the day provided just the right mix of fun and stigma-busting education.

She said new features, such as a photographic exhibition in which 28 secondary school students highlighted the normality and humanity of those with a mental illness, were a great success.  Were hoping to expand this project next year ... it really changed students attitude to mental illness, Ms Crowther said.  Handsome, healthy, employed and in a steady relationship, Mitchell Fairbanks was among 10 living books sharing their stories in order to break down stigma.

R.I.P. Warren Hall

It saddens me to say that my good friend, Musical Director and amazing Pianist Warren Hall passed away in Cairns tonight (18/8/08) after his long battle with cancer. An upcoming memorial service for Warren is to be held at this stage in early September. The Melbourne music scene will be much the lesser for his passing.

I had the privilege and honour to play/sing with Warren when in "Off The Cuff" for a few years. I was always in awe of not only his musical knowledge, but his ability to make it all look so easy. I am definitely better for knowing Warren and will cherish all the gigs we shared together...it was truly an honour to play beside him. He was a true inspiration for many Melbourne musician's and the Melbourne Music Scene won't be the same without him. I'm sure he carried that smile with him right to the end. What a champ!

Cold Snap

Finally, we have video footage of Cold Snap! This was recorded live on Asylum TV in late March 2008 and certainly was an important gig for the guys.

Only two months prior to this show Joe was involved in a serious car accident that saw both him and his wife hit by a truck. Joe received a fracture in his neck, while his wife walked away with minor injuries. Prior to this night Cold Snap had not played together for a good couple of months as a result of Joe being in a neck brace recovering from his injuries. This night actually saw him arrive to the gig wearing his soft collar, only to take it off for the set and put it back on as soon as the show ended.

To say it was an important gig for the guys is an understatement. Even though there had been no rehearsals prior to this show while Joe was recovering, the fire was still evident and it was simply great just to be back on stage together again.

Cold Snap has since commenced gigging around town again and are certainly making a serious name for themselves among blues enthusiasts. Be sure to get down to one of their gigs to witness one of Australia's hottest live blues acts who must be seen live to be truly appreciated.

Unfortunately our gig this Saturday at Nighthawk Blues has been double-booked. Cold Snap will no longer be playing there this Saturday night. The Substitutes will be playing there this Saturday instead. Keep an eye on our gig guide for new Nighthawk dates.

Bye George

This Sunday's gig at George's Blues Klub will be Cold Snap's final performance there. George's will be closing next month and will no longer be a live entertainment venue. Cold Snap's final gig at George's is sure to be another great night, with a few surprises/special guests thrown in for good measure.

Cold Snap would like to take this opportunity to thank both George and Rhonda for their ongoing support over the past year. It has been a great venue to play at and will be sadly missed when they eventually close their doors in July.

Thanks again George & Rhonda!

Nighthawk Blues Sensation!

Last Saturday night's gig at Nighthawk Blues was something to behold. Special thanks go out to all the people who braved the cold weather and made the effort to head out and see the show. Even though it was cold outside, Cold Snap went about warming the place with some cool tunes inside. We even had the pleasure of hearing some of their new original songs for the first time, all of which were very well received from an appreciative crowd.

By the end of the night the whole place was on their feet, hollering and demanding that they keep playing yet "another" song. It's safe to say it was all worthwhile braving the cold to see a Cold Snap do their thing. They are fast making a name for themselves as one of Melbourne's premier blues bands. Cold Snap will be back at Nighthawk Blues again next month on the 12th July to do it all over again. So make sure you get down to see the show.

Cold Snap on TV.

For all of you out there who have a television that can actually pick up Channel 31 in Melbourne, this blog is for you!

COLD SNAP will be performing live on Asylum TV on Channel 31 on Tuesday 10th June at 11pm. The show will then repeat again that week on Wednesday 12pm and Saturday 12pm.

This performance was captured in March earlier this year and was actually Cold Snap's first gig back after a car accident saw Joe come away with a fractured C6 vertebra in his neck and months of wearing a neck brace. As a result they hadn't had the chance to play/rehearse together in the build up to this gig, so to say this night was a significant one to the band is an understatement.

Cold Snap have commenced gigging around Melbourne again since this performance and hope to have an album recorded later this year.

Dont miss it!

By George We're Back!

It was like Cold Snap had never left George's Place. Even though it was around three months since they graced the stage there for the Australia Day Blues Festival. Unfortunately a couple weeks after that gig, Joe was in a serious car accident and came away with a fracture in his neck. That break has kept Cold Snap away for the past three months, but fortunately it was a lucky break and didn't keep them away for too long.

Well last Sunday they were back for the first time since the accident and boy was it worth the wait. The place was packed, the people were dancing and it was like they'd never left.

Cold Snap will next be at George's Blues Klub on the 18th May, but if you can't wait until then you can catch them at the Aero Bar at the Moorabbin Airport this Friday night.

We're Back!

That's right, Cold Snap are back after a couple months off! Joe is recovering well from his car accident and this weekend will be Cold Snap's first gig back since it happened. Come and show your support at George's Blues Klub this Sunday evening. Have a drink and have a dance with Cold Snap and their House Rockin' Chicago Blues!

Joe on Road to Recovery.

Joe's neck is now stable after initially having to wear a neck brace for 2 weeks, he has since been downgraded to a soft collar. With regular physio work Joe is now on the road to recovery. He hopes that his x-ray next month will literally allow him to be "unleashed" and ready to let loose on stage.

With the possibility of being paralysed, killed or even worse have his wife harmed in their car accident last month he now has a new lease on life. His love for the blues has grown even more threw the hardships of the past weeks. Having to overcome a fracture in his C6 vertabrae and recently getting strength back in his neck.

Cold Snap are glad to have him back for their spot at the Mini Festival taking place on 30th March at Musicland. Their 40 minutes spot at the festival will be a great way for Joe to ease back into gigging again before getting back into the swing of things in April. Thanks to all our fans for the support, encouragement, and kind words they have expressed over the past weeks. It has been greatly appreciated. Looking forward to seeing you all soon again in person.

Joe in serious car accident!

Joe Valenti and his wife Sonia were both involved in a serious car accident Wednesday morning. Their vehicle was clipped by a truck while travelling down Sharps Road, Tullamarine causing their vehicle to veer off road, ploughed through huge boulders getting their car airborne and coming to a crashing halt on its side on top of the boulders. The pair had to climb out of the drivers door to safety. Thankfully many witnesses saw the whole thing and stopped to assist until the paramedics arrived.

Joe and Sonia were both taken away in ambulances and admitted to the Emergency Ward at the Royal Melbourne Hospital where they were both treated. Fortunately, Sonia come out of it with a badly bruised foot and a little shaken up. Unfortunately Joe received a slight fracture in his neck and had to stay overnight. He has since returned home and will need to be in a neck brace 24/7 for the next 2 weeks before he is reassessed by the specialists.

Joe said "After spending time in the emergency ward and talking to trauma doctors and the TAC, I feel very lucky to still be here and know that it could've been a lot worse. The police and paramedics couldn't believe that the two of us came out of the of the accident the way we did. The doctors in the trauma ward have had to deal with patients who are in a lot worse position's than me. I just thank God that my wife and I are okay and lived to talk about it. Some people are not as fortunate as we have been, hopefully we can get back to our normal routines in the near future. In the mean time I'm going to rest and keep my neck as still as possible for the next two weeks and see how it all pans out. Enough can't be said about the doctors and nurses in that Emergency/Trauma Ward".

Joe was especially looking forward to this weekends gigs where Saturday night would've seen Cold Snap opening for Michael Charles at the Grand Central Club in Richmond. Michael was the 1st person to ever teach Joe how to play anything on the guitar. Michael has since been performing/recording/living in Chicago for the past 16-17 years and this year has returned to Australia for his first national "Full Circle Tour". It would've also been a "Full Circle" moment for Joe to finally be on stage with his first ever teacher after so many years. Joe is setting a personal goal for himself to be ready for the 30th March and hopefully get the opportunity to play with Michael Charles on that night while he is still in Australia. Cold Snap were also scheduled to play the inaugural Homestead Blues Festival this Sunday. Michael Charles and his band will be filling Cold Snap's scheduled time slot in lieu of what has happened this week. We hope that the Festival is a great success and are keen to be part of it again in 2009.

Any gigs for Cold Snap that were scheduled to be played in the next 2-3 weeks have been cancelled until we receive further information from the doctors. Keep posted and we will keep you informed with how things are travelling along.

Thank you to everyone who has been concerned and sent well-wishes.

George's Blues Klub

Last night Cold Snap played their 1st gig at George's Blues Klub, and after the show they put on for the crowd...it definitely won't be their last!

What they had to say "Thanks Jeannie for bringing Cold Snap to George's Place they were sensational to dance to or just listen to. I hope you all get to see them somewhere soon they are a new talent on the town..."

George loved the show so much he said "I'll have to chain you to the place so you can never leave".

Be sure to keep an eye on their upcoming gigs.

Cold Snap Hits Scarab Bar!

Cold Snap last night played their style of House Rockin' Chicago Blues at the Scarab Bar and had the whole joint jumpin'. It seems every venue they play at these days they convert new fans. One lady said "You guys shouldn't be called Cold Snap because you're Smokin' Hot!". So on this cold and rainy night in Belgrave, some people still found a way to keep warm by getting up and shakin' what they had on the dance floor. Be sure to keep an eye on their gigs to find out where they're playing next.

Nighthawk Blues

Although Cold Snap is proving to be a popular band at Nighthawk Blues, drawing a constant following at one of Melbourne's premier blues venues. Nighthawk Blues has extended their closure for gigs for a little while, it will be a week to week proposition at the moment. They are actually holding a "For Blues Sake" Festival on 7-8 July to help raise money. So get down & support Nighthawk Blues, it would be sad to see it close its doors. A special thanks goes out to Bob at Nighthawk Blues for having us there again last night. Cold Snap had another great night where the whole crowd was up on their feet, dancing, hollering and enjoying themselves right to the very end. Cold Snap is now proving to be a popular band at Nighthawk Blues, drawing a constant following at one of Melbourne's premier blues venues. Be sure to check out our gigs page to see us at our next gig soon.

Mordialloc by the Bay Festival

Cold Snap's recent spot at the Mordialloc by the Bay Festival saw them drag people from the other side of the street to find out what all the fuss was about. The crowd in the street grew with each song and simply couldn't get enough of the House Rockin' Chicago Blues being served up on the day. One blues enthusiast said that he hadn't heard music like that since the 1960's.

Nighthawk Blues - Residency

Cold Snap's recent gig at Nighthawk Blues was an absolute blast and certainly had the whole joint jumpin'. They hit the ground running with their first track and didn't let up for a minute the entire night. Punter's were literally mesmerised and simply had to stay for fear of missing a single moment. One lady said "After I heard them play their first song, I told my partner we have to stick around to see how these guys end their show tonight". Cold Snap didn't disappoint and had the whole place on their feet, dancing, jumping and hollering until the final note was played in their third set. To put it mildly, it was a great night down at Nighthawk Blues. So much so, that as a result they have now secured a monthly residency there for the rest of 2007. So now you will be able to catch Cold Snap every month at one of Melbourne's premier blues venues commencing in April. Do yourself a favour and get down to one of their gigs to witness one of Victoria's, if not Australia's, hottest live blues acts. Check their "Gigs" for further details.
